NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS BLANKET EUROPE: This weekend, Europe is experiencing a widespread outbreak of noctilucent clouds (NLCs). Normally confined inside the Arctic Circle, the electric-blue wisps of frosted meteor smoke have been sighted as far south as Italy:
“It was a beautiful display,” reports Fabrizio Marchi from Treviso, a city near Venice. “We are at +45 N, so the clouds have reached mid-latitudes.”
2024 is supposed to be a bad year for NLCs because Solar Max has arrived. High solar activity should melt these fragile clouds away. Two factors may be counteracting the sun.

First, there’s Tonga. The undersea volcano erupted in January 2022, hurling record amounts of water into the atmosphere. That was two years ago, but it takes about two years for the vapor to circulate up to the mesosphere where NLCs form. Water is a key ingredient for NLCs, so Tonga’s moisture could be turbocharging the clouds
Second is SpaceX. Studies show that water-rich rocket exhaust boosts the abundance of NLCs. So far this year (Jan. 1st – June 27th), 124 rockets have been launched, mostly by SpaceX. That’s 4 times the rate of launches during previous Solar Maxima. Quadrupling the amount of rocket exhaust in the mesosphere might be enough to overwhelm the water and ice destroying effects of the active sun.

“This week’s NLC display not only blew me away, but I would consider it within the top two displays I’ve ever seen in my life,” reports longtime observer Martin McKenna, who took this picture on June 26th from N. Ireland:

These glowing reports came only two days after another outbreak of NLCs appeared over Paris, France.

What’s going on?

In the past 2 weeks alone there have been 7 launches worldwide. A notable launch of a Falcon Heavy rocket on June 25th immediately preceded the Irish outburst of NLCs on June 26th. Even leading experts aren’t certain these events are linked. One thing’s for sure: More rockets are on the launch pad, so remain alert for electric blue.

BUSY INTERSECTION: German astronomer Achim Schaller was watching the sun on June 18, 2024, when several things happened at once. His camera clicked, a plane flew overhead smearing a contrail across the field of view, and the International Space Station (ISS) split the gap between two giant sunspots. It was one busy intersection:
“Traveling at 17,000 mph, the ISS took less than 2 seconds to cross the solar disk,” says Schaller. “In that time I managed to take 17 pictures.”
The ISS isn’t the only spaceship transiting sunspots. The full moon is in Capricorn, so some of us may be working on self-control with this issue. Earth uses humans for slavery, sex, and money, so badly. Venus forms a semi-sextile to Jupiter, and finding a balance between what we want to do and what we think we should do is complex early today. We could feel torn between two drives, seeing-sawing between alternatives. It can be difficult to settle on a plan temporarily. Growing sunspot AR3719 exploded on June 20th, producing a brief but intense M5.7-class solar flare. Radiation from the flare caused a 15-minute shortwave radio blackout over Hawaii. This sunspot was not expected to be very active, but now we know it adds to the chance of flares from behemoth sunspots AR3712 and 13. More on these below…
TWO VERY LARGE SUNSPOTS: Sunspots AR3712 and 13 are so large, they’re altering the sunrise. “The two sunspots were easy to see as the sun rose in morning haze over Gulf Shores, Alabama,” reports David J Kriegler, who took this picture at daybreak on June 20th:
Separately, each of these sunspots is about half as big as the great Carrington sunspot of 1859. Even half of a Carrington Event would be a historic solar storm, which is why we’re carefully monitoring the two active regions.
