The amplitude Van Allen Belts is going into gamma hz. The frequencies on the surface Van Allen belt are staying in Alpha hz, no longer hovering in theta. Qfactor is pulsing high, and the most troublesome to me is the ELM background showing the solid green as the proton storm.

POLAR CAP ABSORPTION EVENT: For the second day in a row, protons from the sun are raining down on Earth. This is causing a shortwave radio blackout inside the Arctic Circle–also known as a polar cap absorption event. The protons are being funneled toward the Arctic by Earth’s magnetic field; their ionizing effect attenuates shortwave transmissions at all frequencies below 30 MHz. This event should last for another 24 to 48 hours. You can monitor its progress here.

SOLAR MAX NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS: Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are spilling out of the Arctic to lower latitudes. Marek Nikodem spotted the electric-blue clouds at midnight (June 11-12) over Szubin, Poland (+53N):

“These are our first noctilucent clouds of the season here in Poland,” says Nikodem. “It was a very nice display.”

2024 is supposed to be a bad year for NLCs. High solar activity is warming Earth’s upper atmosphere and breaking apart water molecules required to form noctilucent ices. However, for reasons researchers don’t fully understand, Solar Max doesn’t always extinquish the clouds. The descent of NLCs to Poland suggests that 2024 may be a year when night-shining clouds defy the sun.

FARSIDE EXPLOSION TOUCHES EARTH: Protons are raining down on Earth’s atmosphere today due to an explosion on the farside of the sun. The source of the blast was old sunspot AR3664. MERCURY, VENUS, AND A FARSIDE CME: This morning, during the early hours of June 12th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) observed a farside CME bracketed by Venus and Mercury. Click to set the scene in motion:

The CME was expelled by old sunspot AR3664, and is responsible for the fusillade of protons now raining down on Earth.

Play the movie again and note how Mercury is racing left to catch Venus. The two planets will converge for a close encounter on June 17th, less than 1 degree apart. Astronomers on Earth won’t be able to see the conjunction because of the sun’s glare. SOHO coronagraphs will have no such trouble. Stay tuned.

: Departing sunspot AR3664 (3697) produced another X-flare today (1108 UT). The X1.5-class explosion occurred just beyond the sun’s western limb and was partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun. 3 MILLON YEARS AGO, AN INTERSTELLAR CLOUD HIT EARTH: Today, Earth is in a safe space. Like all the other planets in the Solar System, it is cocooned within the sun’s magnetic field–a giant bubble called “the heliosphere.” The heliosphere protects us from dangerous things in the Galaxy like interstellar clouds and cosmic rays.

3 million years ago, the heliosphere may have collapsed. A new paper just published in Nature Astronomy argues that a dense cloud of gas hit the Solar System, compressing the heliosphere to a fraction of its usual size.

“Earth suddenly was outside the protective bubble,” says Merav Opher of Boston University, the paper’s lead author. “Earth and all the planets were exposed to massive amounts of hydrogen, increased radiation, and interstellar dust.”

Researchers have long wondered if something happened to Earth 2 to 3 million years ago. Deep-sea sediments, Antarctic snow, and lunar samples from that time period all contain extraterrestrial radioactive isotopes (iron-60 and plutonium-244). The peak is quite striking.

A nearby supernova might have peppered Earth with these substances, but Opher and colleagues had a different idea. In the constellation Lynx there is a ribbon-shaped cluster of dense interstellar clouds. Using a velocity model for the clouds, they found that the sun and at least one of the clouds may have crossed paths 2 to 3 million years ago

“We show that during the cloud’s passage, the heliosphere shrinks to a scale of 0.22 AU, smaller than the Earth’s orbit around the sun,” says Opher. According to their simulation, the helioshere was compressed and stretched into a tadpole-like structure with Earth’s orbit (red circle) on the outside:

There is some evidence that Earth cooled while it was outside the heliosphere. Deep in our oceans, fossils of tiny marine organisms known as foraminifera preserve ancient climate data. Oxygen isotopes in those fossils suggest the temperature dropped 2–3 million years ago. Could this be a result of interstellar gas and cosmic rays altering our atmosphere?

“This idea should be revisited with modern atmospheric modelling,” the authors urge.

Eventually, the cloud passed and the heliosphere bounced back. “Earth was inside its protective bubble again,” says Opher. It’s a good place to be.

RETURN OF AN HISTORIC SUNSPOT: It’s back. Almost. Sunspot AR3664, the source of the historic May 10th superstorm, has spent the past two week’s transiting the farside of the sun. Yesterday, it announced its return with an X2.8-class solar flare. Amateur astronomer Michael Karrer was watching the sun when the explosion occured, and he captured this picture of flying debris:

“I have not seen an explosion like this in my 40 years of observing the sun,” says Karrer. “So fast, so far out into space! It was gigantic.”

The explosion caused a deep shortwave radio blackout over east Asia and hurled a bright CME into space. A NASA model of the CME confirms that it will miss Mercury, Venus and Earth. None of the inner planets will be affected by this powerful event.

How do we know the flare came from AR3664? Helioseismology. The giant sunspot is affecting the way the sun vibrates, and its seismic echoes are visible in maps of the sun’s farside:

This map shows that AR3664 is just behind the southeastern limb of the sun–a good match for the location of yesterday’s X-flare. Clearly, AR3664 is still active as it turns to face Earth again later this week. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text
